Trump administration quietly cuts funding to the nation’s poorest schools

Thanks to an under-the-radar bookkeeping change at the Department of Education, hundreds of rural schools across the US are set to lose vital funds.

As reported in the New York Times, the department has changed the eligibility criteria for the Rural and Low-Income School Programme, which provides funding for school districts in some of the poorest parts of the country.

The change will make it harder for districts to demonstrate their eligibility, meaning hundreds of them will lose tens of thousands of dollars – and in some cases much more.

Nearly a seventh of the US’s public school pupils live in rural school districts, which have long been poor and underfunded. Many depend on the programme to fund everything from anti-bullying initiatives to counselling to language lessons for non-English speakers.

To qualify for the programme, school districts must prove that at least 20 per cent of their area’s school-age children live in poverty.

Officially, they are required to do so using census data, but because the census often leaves out many people living in rural areas, they have in practice been allowed to cite the percentage of their pupils who qualify for free or subsidised meals.

The department has now abruptly decided that it will only allow districts to use census data, meaning districts will struggle to account for all children in their local areas who would qualify.

A department spokeswoman told the Times that the move is simply a matter of following the law and that Congress can legislate to formally change the criteria, but the move has nonetheless met with condemnation from both Democrats and Republicans.

Even some of those sympathetic to Donald Trump and invested in his re-election are baffled as to why the department would withdraw the money from poor, rural districts, including core parts of the president’s electoral base.

Senators including Susan Collins of Maine are now scrambling to put together a fix that will ensure schools can still access the programme.

The Department of Education is led by Betsy DeVos, who was one of Mr Trump’s most controversial cabinet appointees at the start of his administration. She has drawn fire both for her lack of experience in schools and her past statements advocating a religious agenda for public education.

President Trump: Government to withhold funds to sanctuary cities

During his 2016 campaign, President Trump promised to block funding to sanctuary cities. He is now following through with his pledge.

This week, the president announced the federal government will begin withholding funding from sanctuary cities.

President Trump has long fought against sanctuary jurisdictions, saying they put Americans’ safety at risk.

“Sanctuary cities release thousands of criminal aliens out of our prisons and jails back into our communities,” he said.

The Trump administration claimed victory in February after a federal appeals court ruled the Justice Department could block funding from sanctuary cities and states that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan ruled unanimously to overturn a district court’s ruling, which stated the DOJ didn’t have the authority to withhold the funding.

According to the head of the DOJ, the department recently began filing lawsuits and issuing subpoenas to help ICE officials get around sanctuary policies.

“When we’re talking about sanctuary cities, we’re talking about policies that are designed to allow criminal aliens to escape,” stated Attorney General William Barr.

President Trump has said these cities and states “should change their status, go non-sanctuary, and not protect criminals,” echoing the comments he made during his State of the Union speech.

“The United States of America should be a sanctuary for law abiding Americans, not criminal aliens,” he said.

So far Trump has benefited from an economic growth rate that began under Obama, and that continued because of irresponsible tax cuts for the rich. With the conovirus, and declines in the Stock Market, he is being hit with two severe and related problems.

I do not expect much from the President but inarticulate tweets complaining about fake news, and blaming Democrats.

The market dive is an irrational short term response to this virus. People instinctively know that Trump would be re-elected on the strength of the economy and are positively giddy that these negative economic events are taking place because they know it hurts Trump’s chances at reelection. Never mind this is a natural event outside of Trump control. This is costing me REAL money and plenty of others who worked their asses off and saved and invested. Let them all go to Hell financially. It’s a small price to pay to remove Trump right?

      No worries.

Secret Service Charged More At Trump Properties Than Previously Known, Records Show

President Donald Trump’s company has charged taxpayers more than was previously reported for lodging Secret Service at his golf clubs and other properties, even when he was not there, according to new documents obtained by a government watchdog group.

The agency paid the Trump Organization $157,000 more than was previously known, according to Secret Service records released Thursday by Public Citizen, a watchdog group that filed a Freedom of Information Act request three years ago for information on the costs of protecting Trump and his family. The company also charged the agency hotel room rates far higher than Trump’s son Eric, who co-runs the Trump Organization, has previously disclosed.

The new documents primarily show expenditures at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida and his golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey. According to The Washington Post, which has reported extensively on the relationship between Trump’s presidency and his businesses, taxpayers have paid more than $628,000 in Secret Service charges to Trump’s company since 2017. The number is likely even higher because the Secret Service has only released documents primarily from 2017 and 2018, according to the Post.

Reporting from HuffPost and other news outlets has shown the extent to which taxpayers have had to foot the bill for Trump’s frequent golfing trips, which require extensive Secret Service travel and logistics costs. Trump has also profited from his presidency through others, as world leaders and dignitaries often stay at his properties to curry favor with him — most notably at the Trump International Hotel in Washington.

The Secret Service was charged as much as $650 per night for hotel rooms at Mar-a-Lago, The Washington Post reported last month. The new documents also show that at Trump’s golf course in New Jersey, the agency was charged more than $17,000 a month to use a three-bedroom cottage, including having to pay for days Trump was not there.

In an interview with Yahoo Finance in October, Eric Trump claimed that the Secret Service stays at Trump-owned properties virtually “for free — meaning, like, cost for housekeeping.”

“Everywhere that he goes, if he stays at one of his places, the government actually spends, meaning it saves a fortune because if they were to go to a hotel across the street, they’d be charging them $500 a night, whereas, you know we charge them, like $50,” he said.

Economy adds 273K jobs in February, crushing expectations amid coronavirus worries

The U.S. added 273,000 jobs in February, according to data released Friday by the Labor Department, blowing past expectations ahead of a feared coronavirus economic slump.

The unemployment rate ticked down 0.1 percentage points to 3.5 percent, while the labor force participation rate held steady at 63.4 percent. February’s job gain comes after an upwardly revised increase of 273,000 jobs in January and 184,000 in December, according to updated figures released Friday.

Economists had projected the U.S. to add roughly 170,000 jobs in February as unseasonably warm weather and resilient consumer confidence supported a sturdy job market. The strong February jobs report indicates a greater level of strength in a labor market that has steadily added jobs for more than a decade.

First Came Huge Super Tuesday Turnout for Trump, Now His Fox Town Hall Is Most Watched Election Town Hall In Cable News History
Posted at 2:30 pm on March 7, 2020 by Nick Arama

One of the things that is going to win the election in 2020 is enthusiasm and the ability to turn people out to vote.

As my colleague Elizabeth Vaughn reported, while Democrats have had a good turnout in some of their primaries, the turnout of President Donald Trump in primaries where he effectively had no real challenge was been astonishing and it wasn’t just in red states.

In Vermont and Minnesota, Trump’s vote totals beat every past incumbent’s total in the last four decades. In Maine, the president’s vote total bested every primary candidate’s total since before President Ronald Reagan. In Massachusetts, the story was similar, with Trump aggregating a higher vote total than past incumbent Republicans since before Reagan.

And in deeply blue California, with 82 percent of precincts reporting, President Trump collected nearly 1.4 million votes.

Turnout numbers similarly showcased the enthusiasm of Republican voters. In Colorado, for example, Republican turnout for Trump on Tuesday was greater than the past three Republican primaries combined.

But that wasn’t the only indication of enthusiasm for Trump.

Fox News did a town hall with the president, the first one that he’s done with them since 2016 and according to Townhall, it was the most watched election Town Hall in cable news history.

Fox News’ town hall with President Trump, co-moderated by anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, dominated the 6:30-7:30 p.m. ET time slot on Thursday for both total viewership and the 25-54 age demographic.

Fox News had 4.2 million total viewers and 744,000 in the 25-54 age demographic for Trump’s first town hall with the network since the 2016 presidential election. In contrast, MSNBC had 1.4 million total viewers and 239,000 in the 25-54 age demographic during the same time. CNN came in last, with 1 million total viewers and 251,000 in the 25-54 demo, according to Nielsen Media Research. [….]

When the town hall was aired again at 11:00 P.M.-12 A.M. ET, Fox News netted 2 million total viewers and 422,000 in A25-54, meaning the total viewership for the event was 6,137,000 total viewers and 1,166,000 in the A25-54 demo.

It beat Democratic town halls. By a lot.

The president’s town hall had more than 1.5 million more viewers than any of the Democratic primary candidates’ town halls on Fox News, CNN, or MSNBC.

The most-watched town hall for any of the 2020 Democrats also took place on Fox News: The event with Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, which took place in April 2019, had nearly 2.6 million viewers.

Sounds bigly. And it sounds like Democrats may be in trouble come November

Actually I am really glad Trump's Fox town hall drew big ratings. His supporters most of which are older Americans needed to hear Trump say this.

Trump tells town hall he plans to cut entitlements, hopes to replace ObamaCare with 'something great'

*The ACA is actually more popular than ever and especially because it protects people with preexisting conditions. And the Trump administration is in court right now trying to kill that protection and the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case with a decision just before the election.

Oh sure we believe you. We all know "conservatives" never lie.

But it does not matter if he is lying here or even if the person with coronavirus even came close to Trump and other members of his administration. What matters is the proof positive that no one including Trump and Pence are safe from this virus.

CPAC founder who touched both Trump and virus patient insists president ‘scrubbed’ hands at event

*Really?? And did you also scrub down all the surfaces you and Trump and the coronavirus patient touched since they now say the virus can live on surfaces for up to 24 hours? Because washing your hands after shaking hands doesn't do a bit of fucking good if you just turn around and touch a surface where the virus is present.

Nothing like having "the best people." Ben Carson is only the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Not like what Trump's plan isn't something he should know. Or maybe he does know and its just too fucking scary to say on TV.
